What is BI?

Business Intelligence is a process in which an organization takes its data and converts it into information, and then into knowledge, and gets that knowledge to the right people, at the right time and in an effective form, so that the best strategic and tactical decisions can be made in a timely fashion.

The BI process is repeated consistently, and is constantly refined to optimize its results. This yields competitive advantage for the organization in the market and stability in business.

Data to Information to Knowledge

Data describe events or activities, usually in an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system or accounting system such as Microsoft Dynamics GP or SAP B1, or a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system. Examples would be the purchase or sale of an item, or a sales call. Data can also come from other sources.

Information is the grouping of data into a logical presentation such as a balance sheet from an ERP, or a sales pipeline from a CRM.

Knowledge is the presentation of information in a form, usually summarized, that is clear and actionable.
